This isn't what I want, I want to be able to bounce between using the controller natively and using DS4Windows automatically. I keep running into problems where the "temporarily shut off DS4Windows" method will shut the controller off completely, lights and all, and I can't reconnect unless I turn DS4Windows back on. The short version is, I haven't found the easiest way to have DS4Windows turn on/use a specific profile when launching a specific program, and then temporarily turn off when I'm running a program that uses the PS5 controller natively. In Steam's case, there's this whole workaround you have to do in order to pull that off, and yet that same workaround doesn't seem to work with other programs. Ideally, I would want DS4Windows to automatically shut off when I'm running something that supports the PS5 controller natively, like Steam. At least for me, the biggest issue is getting the program to seamlessly switch on and off on its own, or load up the right profile in-between programs. When you're emulating Wii or Wii U, the gyro aiming is actually more precise than the actual Wiimote and doesn't require you to hook up any sensor bars or anything.īut as is the case with nearly every PC-related thing out there, DS4Windows is a pain in the ass to set up. When all is said and done, you'll have no choice but to use DS4Windows.Īnd when it works, it works great: every Xbox PC game works perfectly, rumble included. In this case, your other best alternative is using Playnite, which is a more barebones but still working launcher that can add Xbox games as well as Steam, Origin, EA and whatever hundred other services are out there.īut even THIS comes with the caveat that both the Playnite launcher and Xbox games won't recognize the PS5 controller. Xbox PC games are a big offender, usually requiring you to launch them through their own Xbox launcher. Unfortunately, not every non-Steam game will play nice with Steam, even if you set them as non-Steam shortcuts. It's fantastic and, more importantly, it's easy. You can also map button toggles and even desktop keys. Visual Novels are a piece of cake when you've got the mouse mapped to either the left analog or touchpad (or both, even). Steam has controller profiles for nearly everything, including the PS5 controller, and gives you a whole heap of customizable features right out of the gate, including the ability to create separate controller profiles for each game. Unfortunately, not every game or program will natively support the controller, in which case you have two options: the first, and honestly best option, is using Steam. If you play a whole bunch of different types of PC games, including emulation, there's nothing this controller can't fulfill. Preferences aside on how the controller feels or its buttons, there's no denying the added benefits of using the touchscreen like a virtual mouse or gyro aiming for motion controls. I don't want things to turn into a debate about kb/m vs controllers for PC gaming, so to get it out of the way: IF you're someone who prefers to use a controller for PC gaming whenever possible, I really can't recommend enough using a PS5 controller (or even PS4). I could write a book about the love/hate relationship I have with DS4Windows, but I'll make a thread instead.
